A Message from the Chair

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen of the Maryland/Delaware SAF. I am honored to serve as the new Division chair. I have been an SAF member for over 20 years and have been involved with the MD/DE executive committee since 2016. Being a part of the executive committee has been a rewarding experience as I’ve been afforded the opportunity to work with professionals with varied backgrounds from all around Maryland and Delaware.

My current employment is with the Maryland Forest Service where I am the Forest Manager for Chesapeake Forest and Pocomoke State Forest on the eastern shore of Maryland. Every day I interact with foresters, other natural resource professionals, and the public – and I take every opportunity to help and inform them about the forests around them and their community. I got involved with forestry through the Envirothon program in high school and I attended Virginia Tech for my undergraduate degree.

While at Virginia Tech, I assisted graduate students with their research projects, mostly related to forest soils. I graduated from Virginia Tech in 2006 with a B.S. in Forestry, and shortly thereafter I began working for the Maryland Forest Service as a contractual employee assisting with forest inventory in western Maryland. From there, a unique job opportunity on the eastern shore became available where I would be able to work part-time for both a private forestry consulting company and the State. After a couple of years, a full-time position with the State became available, which eventually led to where I am today. I have been fortunate to interact and collaborate with landowners, consultants, private industries, government agencies, and others both in my career and through SAF.

The executive committee is busy planning events for this year and beyond, and I am excited to be the Maryland/Delaware SAF chair. I hope that I will see you at an SAF meeting or event this year.

Kirk Rodgers Fund

The Maryland Sustainable Forestry Council and the Maryland / Delaware Division of the Society of American Foresters are working to raise funds to place a memorial plaque to honor the life and conservation work of Kirk Rodgers. The plaque will be placed as part of the planned interpretive signage for the fire tower located at Church Creek, MD. Kirk was the grandson of Maryland's first State Forester, Fred Besley. His family history is intertwined with that of the Maryland Forest Service, so the fire tower historical interpretation site is a fitting place to recognize both Kirk's significant contributions to forestry in Maryland and the family's long history and influence.
